Mathematics in the Primary School
'Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics'
Dean Schlicter
As the head of primary mathematics, I have the wonderful opportunity to lead and support a small team. I believe that it is important to have a consistent approach to how we teach mathematics while giving teachers the space to be creative and innovative with their lesson ideas.
Mastery in Mathematics
We ensure that all students have a deep, secure understanding of mathematics as they progress through the primary years through consolidation of skills, reasoning and justifying, and problem solving.
5 Minute Maths
Quick recall of previous learning to consolidate continuously.
"5 minute maths has made my calculating faster and better because I know I have a time limit and I practice every day so I can calculate quicker AND get the right answer".
Grade 5 student at NKCS
Reasoning and Problem Solving
Giving students the opportunity to explore mathematics and think deeper about how to apply their skills to real life contexts.

Organising Whole School Maths Events
I communicate and collaborate with different departments across the school to organise events where students, all the way from kindergarten up to high school (over 1000 pupils!), have fun and engaging opportunities in mathematics.
